Animal vs Plant vs Human 'Bioplacenta': What to Know

Educational reading for licensed practitioners — not clinical or injection guidance.

The word "placenta" on a skincare label can mean several very different things. As the ingredient has returned to prominence, so has the marketing shorthand around it — "bioplacenta", "plant placenta", "marine placenta" — and the terms are often used loosely. For anyone advising patients or choosing stock, the distinctions matter, because origin drives everything from the plausible mechanism to the sourcing questions you should ask.

Three Categories, Not One

Broadly, products marketed under the placenta banner fall into three groups.

  • Animal-derived placenta extract — genuinely derived from animal placental tissue, most commonly equine (horse) or porcine (pig) or ovine (sheep). This is a real biological extract carrying amino acids, peptides and growth factors.
  • Plant "bioplacenta" — not placenta at all in the biological sense. The term describes plant-derived complexes (often based on sprout extracts, amino acids and phytohormone-like compounds) formulated to mimic the conditioning profile associated with placental extract. It is a marketing analogy, not an equivalent tissue.
  • Human placenta extract (HPE) — derived from full-term human placenta collected after delivery and purified under sterilisation protocols. It has the longest clinical history and the most defined regulatory pathways, and in some markets is used in prescription medical products.

Reading a label with these three buckets in mind prevents the most common misunderstanding: assuming a "plant placenta" serum contains the same class of actives as an animal or human extract. It does not.

Animal-Derived Extract

Animal placenta extract is the format most people picture. Equine placenta features prominently in several Japanese-origin cosmetic lines — the LNC placenta serum is a familiar example — where it is positioned as a hydrating, radiance-supporting active. The proposed benefit is the same growth-factor and amino-acid conditioning story that underpins the whole category.

The key considerations here are sourcing and species disclosure. A credible animal-derived product should state the source species and describe screening and processing. Because it is a biological material, traceability is not optional, and patients with specific ethical or religious concerns will want the species named plainly.

Plant "Bioplacenta"

Plant bioplacenta exists largely to answer a demand: consumers who want the "placenta" positioning without an animal- or human-derived ingredient. These formulations lean on botanical extracts and amino-acid complexes and can be perfectly good cosmetic products in their own right. What they are not is a like-for-like substitute for a true placental extract — the biochemistry is different, and the "placenta" in the name is analogy rather than origin.

For a vegan or plant-preferring patient this is a feature, not a flaw, provided everyone understands what is in the bottle. The honest framing is: a well-formulated botanical serum marketed with placenta-adjacent language, not a plant that produces placenta.

Human Placenta Extract

HPE sits apart because of its clinical lineage and its regulatory weight. Purified human placenta preparations such as the Laennec and Curacen lines are used in professional settings in some countries and are subject to the widest variation in legal status worldwide. A product that is a prescription medical treatment in one market may be unavailable, or available only as a cosmetic topical, in another. HPE also carries the most stringent sourcing expectations — documented donor screening, batch-level pathogen testing and defined sterilisation.

Because of this, HPE should never be casually equated with a cosmetic animal or plant product. It is a different category of material with a different oversight framework.

How the Evidence Compares

None of the three has the depth of clinical evidence that established HA-based injectables enjoy, but they are not equal. Human placenta extract carries the largest research literature, much of it from South Korean and Japanese groups, and the clearest regulatory recognition in the markets that permit it. Animal extract has a long cosmetic track record but a thinner formal evidence base. Plant bioplacenta is evaluated as any botanical cosmetic would be — on formulation and tolerability rather than on placental biology, which it does not contain.

Questions to Ask Before You Stock or Recommend

  • What is the actual origin — animal (which species), plant, or human?
  • Does the supplier document screening, processing and sterilisation for biological materials?
  • Is the claim cosmetic or medical, and does the local regulatory status match that claim?
  • Does the marketing language ("bioplacenta") describe the source honestly, or imply an origin the product does not have?

The Takeaway

"Placenta" is a category, not a single ingredient. Animal extract is a genuine biological active with a cosmetic heritage; plant "bioplacenta" is a botanical analogy, not placental tissue; and human placenta extract is a clinically-rooted, tightly-regulated material in a class of its own. Match the origin to the patient's preferences and the claim to the evidence, and browse the placenta range with the label read carefully.
