The honest answer is that most patients experience mild, transient discomfort rather than significant pain — but comfort during dermal filler treatment is also genuinely manageable through product choice, technique, and preparation. Setting Honest Expectations
Discomfort during filler treatment is real but typically mild, and it varies with the area being treated, the technique used, and the individual patient's own pain threshold. Needle and Cannula Technique
Technique choice also affects comfort, particularly for larger-volume treatments. A blunt-tip cannula, inserted through a single small entry point rather than multiple needle punctures, is commonly associated with reduced bruising and discomfort compared with a standard needle across larger treatment areas, since it can pass through tissue planes with less trauma to blood vessels. Blunt-tip cannulas are a relevant option to have available for patients who report high sensitivity or bruise easily, or where product needs to be dispersed across a wider area.
What to Tell Patients About Normal Post-Injection Sensations
Patients should be prepared for a stretching or tension sensation as the filler is placed, sometimes accompanied by mild tingling or a pulsating feeling that generally settles within about twenty minutes. In the days following treatment, mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at injection sites are common and expected, and typically resolve within about a week. Giving patients this information in advance — rather than leaving them to wonder whether a normal reaction is something to worry about — reduces unnecessary follow-up calls and supports confidence in the outcome.
