That does not mean the conversation about safety can be skipped — patients ask about it regularly, and a clear, honest answer is part of informed consent. An Established but Imperfect Science
Aesthetic medicine is not an exact science, and even with an experienced practitioner and a well-regarded product, results can fall short of what was intended. This is not a reason to avoid treatment, but it is a reason to discuss expectations candidly before proceeding. Common and Uncommon Side Effects

Reversibility as a Safety Feature
One of the clearest safety advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is that their effect can be corrected or fully reversed using hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA and accelerates its reabsorption. This option does not exist for fillers built on other materials, such as poly-L-lactic acid (as in Sculptra) or calcium hydroxylapatite (as in Radiesse), where an unwanted result simply has to resolve on its own over months or years. This distinction is worth explaining clearly to patients weighing which filler type to choose.
Duration and the Role of Maintenance
Because HA and the materials used in most fillers are gradually broken down and processed by the body, results are temporary by design — generally lasting anywhere from six months to over a year, depending on the product, the treated area, and individual factors such as metabolism and muscle activity. Maintenance treatments, once an initial result is established, typically require less product than the first session, since they are topping up rather than building volume from nothing.
