What Radiofrequency Devices Do

Safety Considerations for Practitioners

RF treatments are generally considered safe in trained hands, but the underlying mechanism — heating tissue above 43°C — carries a real risk of thermal injury if energy is excessive or contact with a given area is prolonged. A few points are worth keeping in mind:

  • Most modern handpieces include built-in temperature sensors to help prevent excessive heating; older monopolar devices without this safeguard carry a higher risk of fat atrophy and visible depressions.
  • Outcomes are strongly operator-dependent, with results varying by experience and treatment aggressiveness.
  • Not every patient responds equally, and setting realistic expectations about the pace and scale of improvement is part of the consultation.
