Few debates in injectable practice are as persistent as cannula versus needle. It is often framed as a simple safety verdict, but the evidence is more nuanced than "cannulas are safe and needles are risky." Understanding what the literature actually supports — and what it does not — helps practitioners choose the right instrument for the region rather than following a slogan.
The Instruments, Briefly
A needle is sharp and delivers product precisely at the point of entry, with a straightforward, direct path. A microcannula is a blunt-tipped, flexible tube introduced through a single pilot hole made by a needle, then advanced through tissue to deposit product away from the entry point.
The theory behind the cannula's safety argument is intuitive: a blunt tip is more likely to push a vessel aside than to pierce it, and one entry point means fewer skin punctures. But intuition and evidence are not the same thing, and the details matter.
What the Evidence Actually Supports

Safety Is a System, Not a Tool
Whichever instrument is chosen, the fundamentals of vascular safety are unchanged, and no tool substitutes for them:

- Sensible product selection, plane and volume for the area.
