Platelet-rich plasma, commonly known by its acronym PRP, has an appeal that few other aesthetic treatments can match: it uses the patient's own blood as the active ingredient. That autologous quality shapes both how it is marketed and how it is received by patients wary of synthetic or foreign material. This overview is educational and does not provide an injection protocol.
What PRP Is and How It Is Prepared
PRP is derived from a patient's own venous blood, processed in a centrifuge to separate it into its component layers: red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma rich in platelets. The platelet-rich layer is what gets used clinically. This separation step matters — whole blood reinjected without processing would introduce white blood cells that provoke inflammation rather than support regeneration, which is why a validated PRP preparation system, rather than a simple spin, is central to a reliable result.
Platelets carry growth factors that play a central role in normal tissue repair and healing. Concentrating them and reintroducing them into the skin is intended to stimulate fibroblast activity, which in turn supports the body's own production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.
Common Indications
In aesthetic practice, PRP is most often discussed for:
- General facial rejuvenation, including improvements in tone, elasticity, and fine lines
- Skin recovery following more aggressive procedures, such as laser resurfacing
- Dehydrated or sun-damaged skin
- Stretch marks and certain types of scarring
- Hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), where PRP is used to support follicle activity
Because the mechanism relies on stimulating the body's own regenerative processes rather than adding volume, PRP is generally categorised alongside skin-quality treatments rather than volumising ones, and it pairs naturally with microneedling as a delivery method.
PRP is not confined to aesthetic medicine, either. The same principle — concentrating a patient's own growth factors and reintroducing them to accelerate repair — is applied in orthopaedics, dentistry, burn care, and sports medicine, which speaks to a reasonably well-established rationale behind the underlying biology, even where cosmetic outcomes are still building a stronger evidence base.
The Treatment Process, in Outline
A PRP session generally follows a recognisable sequence: blood is drawn from the patient, processed in a centrifuge using a dedicated PRP kit, and the resulting plasma is then administered to the treatment area. The quality of each step matters — from the specification of the PRP collection tube used to draw and separate the blood, to the correct centrifuge settings for the system in use. Expected Course and Results
A degree of improvement is often reported after a single session, but as with most regenerative treatments, results are cumulative and individual. A typical course involves three sessions spaced roughly a month apart, followed by a maintenance session every six months or so to sustain the effect. Because the treatment stimulates the skin's existing regenerative capacity rather than adding foreign volume, it is not generally understood to carry a meaningful risk of "over-treatment" in the way some injectables do — though, as with any injection, sound technique and appropriate spacing between sessions remain important.
Considerations and Candidate Screening
Because PRP uses the patient's own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is low compared with treatments using foreign material. Standard injectable contraindications still apply, however, including acute infectious disease, active skin inflammation such as acne or herpes in the treatment area, pregnancy and breastfeeding, blood clotting disorders, and certain chronic illnesses. Patients are typically advised to avoid alcohol for a few days before treatment, as it can increase the likelihood of bruising, and to limit sauna use, swimming, and intense physical activity for the first few days afterward while the skin recovers from the micro-trauma of injection.
