Few areas of aesthetics generate as much confused terminology as skin-quality injectables. "Skinbooster", "biorevitalisation" and "biostimulator" are used almost interchangeably in marketing, yet they describe genuinely different mechanisms. Getting them straight is the first step to matching the right treatment to the right concern.
Skinboosters: Hydration First
A skinbooster is, at its simplest, hyaluronic acid delivered into the skin to hydrate it. The HA is not cross-linked to hold a shape; it is placed as micro-deposits to bind water, soften fine texture and give the skin a smoother, more luminous quality. Volume and contour are not the goal.
This is also where the one clear regulatory landmark sits. SKINVIVE by Juvederm, formerly Volite, is the only injectable specifically FDA-approved to improve skin quality through hydration. Other well-regarded options — Restylane Vital among them — are CE-marked and used internationally in the same role. If the concern is dull, dehydrated, slightly rough skin, this is the category to reach for.
Biorevitalisation: Feeding the Skin
Biorevitalisation overlaps with skinboosting but leans on a different idea: rather than hydration alone, the aim is to supply the skin with ingredients that support cell function — hyaluronic acid alongside amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants or nucleotides, depending on the product. Many mesotherapy-style cocktails belong here.
The distinction is one of emphasis. A skinbooster is essentially HA for water; a biorevitalisation treatment is often a nutrient-and-HA blend intended to improve the skin's biological environment over a course. In everyday clinic language the two words are frequently swapped, and that is usually harmless — but it helps to know that biorevitalisation implies "nourish and revitalise", not just "hydrate".
Bio-Remodelling: A Special Case
Sitting between the two is bio-remodelling, best represented by Profhilo. It uses a high concentration of non-cross-linked HA that spreads widely and stimulates collagen and elastin as well as hydrating. It is neither a classic skinbooster nor a filler — a useful reminder that these categories shade into one another rather than sitting in tidy boxes.
Biostimulators: Building New Collagen
Biostimulators are a different proposition entirely. They are not primarily about adding HA or water; they are placed to provoke the patient's own fibroblasts into laying down new collagen over weeks and months. The material is gradually resorbed, and what remains is the tissue the body has built.
The main chemistries are:
- PLLA — poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra). A pure stimulator that adds almost no immediate volume and works entirely through the collagen it provokes over a course.
- CaHA — calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse). Dual-action: the gel carrier gives some immediate volume while the calcium microspheres stimulate collagen; it can also be diluted for a pure skin-quality effect.
Because the result develops gradually and reads as a genuine improvement in the skin's foundation, biostimulators answer the global "deflated, crêpey" look that hydration alone cannot fix.
Where Polynucleotides Fit
A newer regenerative category — polynucleotides such as Plinest — is often folded into this conversation. These purified DNA-fragment products are used to improve skin quality and support repair, and are frequently described alongside biorevitalisation. It is worth being precise on their status: no injectable polynucleotide product currently holds FDA approval. They are CE-marked and used widely internationally, and are best presented as a distinct regenerative tool rather than a like-for-like filler or biostimulator.
Choosing Between Them
A rough decision guide:
- Dull, dehydrated, rough skin → skinbooster (SKINVIVE, Restylane Vital)
- Skin that needs nourishing and revitalising over a course → biorevitalisation / mesotherapy
- Early laxity plus dullness, wanting hydration and firmness → bio-remodelling (Profhilo)
- Global collagen loss, a "deflated" foundation → biostimulator (Sculptra, Radiesse)
Why the Confusion Persists
The terms blur for understandable reasons. All four categories are delivered by injection into or beneath the skin, all aim to improve how skin looks rather than to sculpt a feature, and several products genuinely straddle boundaries — Profhilo hydrates and stimulates; hyperdiluted Radiesse behaves partly like a skin-quality treatment. Marketing then compounds the problem, since "biorevitalisation" and "skinbooster" both sound appealing and are used loosely to mean "something that freshens the skin". None of this is dangerous, but it does make comparison shopping hard for patients and precise counselling important for practitioners.
Combining the Categories
In real plans these tools are layered rather than pitted against one another. A patient with global collagen loss and poor skin quality might have a biostimulator to rebuild the foundation, then bio-remodelling or a skinbooster to refine hydration and surface quality, with regenerative support added where repair is the priority. The mechanisms are complementary precisely because they solve different problems — which is the strongest argument for understanding them clearly in the first place. Sequencing and spacing should follow a full assessment by the treating practitioner, not a fixed template.
