The outcome of a chemical peel is often decided before the acid ever touches the skin. Priming — the two to four weeks of preparation beforehand — conditions the stratum corneum, calms melanocytes and thickens the skin's own defences, so the peel penetrates more evenly and the recovery is smoother. Skipping it is the most common reason a peel gives a patchy result or triggers pigmentation, particularly in darker skin.
Why priming works
Priming does three useful things at once. It accelerates cell turnover so the acid meets a more uniform surface and penetrates evenly rather than pooling in thicker areas. It suppresses melanocyte reactivity, which lowers the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). And it strengthens the barrier and builds tolerance to actives, so the skin copes better with the controlled injury. The net effect is a more predictable peel with less downtime.
Build tolerance with a retinoid
A tolerated retinoid is the backbone of priming. Used for two to four weeks beforehand, it speeds turnover and primes the skin to respond evenly. Introduce it gently — a lower-strength option such as Dermastir Retinol Serum or Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3, a few nights a week — and stop it several days before the peel itself to avoid stacking irritation. Patients new to retinoids should build tolerance carefully rather than starting at full strength during prep.
Suppress pigment early
For any patient prone to pigmentation, calming the melanocytes before the peel is the single most protective step. Cleanse and degrease correctly
A clean, degreased surface lets the acid work predictably. In the days before treatment, a purpose-made pre-peel cleanser such as MM System Pre-Peeling Cleanser removes residual oil and product without stripping the barrier. On the day, thorough degreasing per the peel manufacturer's protocol is what makes penetration even.
Lock in daily photoprotection
Priming and sun exposure do not mix. Sensitised, actively-turning-over skin pigments readily, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 50 is compulsory throughout the prep window, ideally a high-protection, pigment-oriented sunscreen such as Mesoestetic Mesoprotech Melan 130 SPF 50+. A patient who tans or burns during the two weeks before a peel should be rescheduled, not treated.
A simple two-week template
- Days 1–10: retinoid two to three nights a week; pigment inhibitor nightly; vitamin C each morning; SPF 50 daily.
- Days 11–12: stop the retinoid; continue pigment control, antioxidant and SPF.
- Peel day: cleanse and degrease thoroughly; proceed only if the skin is calm and unburnt.
Adjust the window for phototype and sensitivity — darker or reactive skin benefits from the full four weeks.
